Today I thought it would be helpful to share some of my favorite inexpensive home decor ideas that can make a big impact with less money. Whether it’s a complete remodel or a quick renovation, it doesn’t take a fortune to create a beautiful home you love.

Some of these cheap decorating ideas involve a bit of DIY, but I promise they’re totally doable and worth the effort.

Custom curtains can quickly exceed your budget, but there are ways to achieve a custom look for less. Buying curtains at more affordable stores like HomeGoods, IKEA, and Overstock is a great alternative to more expensive options. I have white curtains from IKEA and green curtains from Overstock that I love and highly recommend.

Looking for more performance? Consider painting your interior windows a dark charcoal gray or black (mine are painted ironstone) and add bamboo shades.

Decorating tip: Hang the curtain halfway between the top of the cord and the bottom of the ceiling (or batten) and wide enough that the edge of the curtain just touches the side of the window.

I really love using accent walls to add drama. Good options are painting the end of the hallway, adding bold and colorful wallpaper to the bedroom, or creating a custom wood wall treatment. Are you a tenant? Removable or temporary wallpaper is a great way to update your walls without making a long-term investment.

Have you thought about painting the ceiling? Ceilings are a great place to play with color or wallpaper.

Slatted moldings and plank walls are my go-to style treatments for giving a room an accessible yet dramatic stylish backdrop.

I have nothing against big box stores for home goods, but buying vintage items is the best way to give your decor that extra boost you need for a personalized look. Opt for a unique piece of furniture instead of a basic TV stand, replace plain art with a unique vintage painting, or replace architectural grade lighting with a cool antique alternative.

Incorporating plants is a super easy way to add life and texture and instantly brighten up a space. Need help transitioning from fake plants to real ones? These low-maintenance houseplants are my favorite because of their ease of care and maintenance.

I’ve painted everything from windows, doors and walls to furniture and joinery, and I’m still amazed at the power of color. A simple can of paint can dramatically change the look of a room or breathe new life into an outdated piece of furniture.

Replacing an outdated fan or light fixture with one that better suits your style is a DIY project that even a novice can do. I love adding vintage lighting to my home. If you too love the vintage look, this collection of retro-inspired school lamps can help you.

Don’t limit yourself to closets. Replacing hardware on furniture can make as much of a difference as replacing some bathroom knobs or some kitchen cabinet handles.

9. Change pillows I change and change covers a lot, especially pillows from room to room. It’s one of my favorite ways to change and update a part at a very low cost.

Freshen up your curb appeal by painting or replacing your front door, or if you’re feeling bolder and more ambitious, try adding a barn or antique door to a closet, pantry, or laundry room.

Facebook Marketplace, Habitat for Humanity, and auctions are great sources for unique and affordable antique and vintage doors.

Even after creative thinking, there will always be things that you no longer like and cannot reuse in any other way, and these things should be removed. But instead of throwing them away, consider joining a flea market. First, the money you earn from selling items will increase your interior renovation budget. While you’re at it, you’re sure to find a used item for your home! Keep your creative mind sharp when you hang out at the flea market. Most of the things you find may not be exactly what you’re looking for, but often all it takes is a little updating to make them perfect for your home!

Another great way to get rid of unwanted stuff and get new stuff in return is to trade stuff with friends. You can even turn it into another party event. Have a themed party where everyone brings something they want to throw away. Then put everything on the table and go shopping. In the evening you can also share tips and exchange budget interior design ideas to apply to your home.
