Designing a home office is no easy task. Because if you make a mistake, you just don’t see it that way
Home Office Ideas: 55 Rooms That Are Smart And Practical |
It, you feel it – you feel it every day from 9 to 5. A good home office is comfortable enough to get through the day, just enough to keep you focused, and just enough fun to get your creative juices flowing.
“Life can feel so crazy,” says Jennifer J. Morris, interior designer and principal of JMorris Design. “Organizing and prioritizing your workspace honors the hard work you’ve put in.”
Life can be pretty crazy. Organizing and prioritizing your workspace is a tribute to your hard work.
Start by finding a place to work. (No, it doesn’t have to be a separate room. According to Morris, you can do a lot with an unused closet.) Next, start pulling your space together.

Designing a home office can be difficult. Fortunately, the first step is simple: think about how you like to work.
“I start by understanding how the client needs the space to operate,” says Jenny Kramer, senior designer at Caroline Brackett Design Studio. Ask yourself questions like: How do I like to work? What bothers me? And when am I most productive?
“For a home office, especially, function shouldn’t come at the expense of aesthetics,” says Kramer. “Two must work together.” So, focus on what you want from the space.
Small And Creative Home Office Design Ideas To Inspire
Most jobs require access to some kind of equipment—whether it’s a large printer and copier or a fancy notebook and pen. But there are times when you don’t always need that gear.
“What tools do you regularly use in your work?” Cramer asked. “And what equipment and supplies do you not need constant access to?”
Once you answer these questions, you can create a store that fits your needs. One of the designer’s hobbies is making shelves and cabinets to order.
“I love how a custom-built home can be everything the client wants,” Kramer says. “If well thought out and planned, they can make the work process easier.”
Home Office Decor Ideas + Designs For A Creative Work Space
When designing your home office, you want to set yourself up for success. And part of that means anticipating and avoiding your pain points.
Think about what you put in your space and whether it really needs to be there. Is it a fun decoration that makes your office more comfortable and functional, or does it distract you from your work?
The desk is the focal point of any home office, and you need to think about how the desk feels as well as how it looks. “Always invest in well-proportioned tables,” says Kramer. After all, you will spend most of the day there.
Find a desk that’s big enough to be a comfortable workspace and tall enough to accommodate your feet—and then think about how it will look.

Many of us use large desktop monitors while working, and some use more than one. With a little creativity, you can turn these utility objects into design features.
“If you work from home, you might have multiple monitors for your computer,” says Ginger Curtis, owner and director of Urban Science Designs. “This can be a design challenge, but we’ve found that installing a framed TV as a monitor keeps your space clean and beautiful.”
Even if you don’t have room to mount a TV on the wall, you can keep things nice by matching your monitor to a different color scheme. Pair gray art with a shiny silver monitor or get a monitor that matches your all-white color scheme.
A fresh coat of paint can look good in any space, and since home offices are smaller than living rooms or bedrooms, you can get away with making your color darker than normal.

“Color is the best way to make an immediate impact,” says Curtis. “If your office is drab or needs a change, a fresh coat of dark green or dark blue on your walls and cabinets can create a cozy feel.”
When it comes to the home office, light is your friend. See the spotlight. Morris recommends “avoiding glare while illuminating the room clearly.”
One of the most common mistakes people make when designing home offices? “The position of the computer has to do with glare and windows—not thinking about the best desk position,” notes Morris.
Install bright windows and curtains that you can adjust throughout the day, and turn on lights with built-in dimmers. Both of these plugins give you control over your home office environment.
Ways To Refresh Your Home Office On A Budget
Since a home office is a functional space, standard decor can be overlooked. If something is beautiful but impractical, does it deserve a home? Fortunately, pretty and practical aren’t your only options. Well-designed desk accessories can add function and form to your space in equal measure.
“A cute desk organizer can make a big difference,” says Morris. “Pen holders, cool staplers and tape dispensers can really up your desk game.”
A great chair isn’t just beautiful—it’s comfortable and supportive enough to get you through the day. “Ergonomics should be a big consideration when choosing desks and chairs,” says Morris. She recommends finding a chair that works for you.
Cramer agreed. “If you sit all day, it’s important that your chair has good lumbar support,” she says. Comfort is worth the investment, and if the chair you look after helps you work without distraction, it will probably pay off in the long run.
Offices That Optimize Above The Desk Décor
Floor space is often at a premium in a home office, but you still have plenty of wall space. “I like to build great solutions that fit the needs of the office,” says Morris. “I often use beautiful magnetic canvas wallpaper on table tops and bare walls.”
By pairing this wallpaper with some magnets, you can hang calendars, inspirational items and important documents on your wall.
If you don’t want to invest in wallpaper, you can always hang a large cork board to achieve a similar effect.
Your home office doesn’t have to be a formal, separate room. If you have enough space, all you need is a place to sit and work. With a little creativity, you can place the table anywhere. Turn a hanging shelf into a workspace or slide a desk under the window. So, grab a fancy chair and you’re good to go.
Of The Best Minimalist Desks For The Simple Home Office
Your home office shouldn’t be easy on the eyes—it should be easy to use. So make sure you always have it within reach. According to Morris, “creating a clean house” for your desires can go a long way. It means letting them sit on your desk, instead of pushing them out of sight, out of mind and out of touch.
Books and the home office make a natural pairing. why? Your books need a place to live and your home office needs a place
“If you have shelves, beautiful books are a must,” says Curtis. Use some to increase your storage and keep your favorite reference books ready in case you need to refer to them during the work day.
