How To Make Space In Small Closet – Learn how to organize a small closet with simple accessories to maximize space and keep all your clothes organized!
If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you know that our house is small. We live in a three-bedroom townhouse, and while we love it, we also have to be very smart with our space. I try to think of this as a positive thing because it goes a long way in forcing us to go through and realize what we leave behind in our homes.
How To Make Space In Small Closet
One area that I always feel we can do better is our attic. There’s only one, Donnie and I share, and it’s not the biggest in the world. It only had one built-in shelf and rail and I knew there had to be a better way to organize a room than that, so we decided to change it!

I learned a few things during this time, so I thought I’d share them in case you too are dealing with small rooms.
After years of living in a small townhouse, I’ve learned many useful tips and tricks for organizing when space is tight, and I’m sharing my favorites in this quick guide!
Oh, how I love to understand! A few weeks ago I went through all my clothes and got rid of anything that didn’t fit or didn’t look right. (Looks like the clothes I wore in high school and college 10-15 years ago are no longer “in”. Who knew?! 😉 )
By the time I was done with everything, I’m sure more than half of my clothes were lost.
Tips For Reconfiguring A Closet
That’s a lot of empty hangers! Just taking that first step was so exciting, and you know what I learned? Easier to wear than there is
It really helped me get rid of all the things I didn’t wear because only the “good things” were left. The only choice I was left with was clothes that I liked and that fit. victory!
2. Make a list of what you want for the place, and then choose the tools to work with.
Like most times when I’m trying to organize a space, I went to Pinterest to see some of the things that others had done. I’m oohing and ahhing over all the beautiful rooms that are decorated. But I realized that the owners of these rooms had different needs and places than me. So I had to think about what we needed

After looking at our “things”, I realized that there should be room for pants, shirts and shoes. I wanted a place to make less dresses and longer items. I had several sweaters and sweatshirts that I prefer to fold rather than hang, and we keep several board games and small items in this room. It was too tall for a small space, but I knew we could pull it off, so I started finding the best pieces to make it.
To be honest, when we started the organization of the storage room, I thought that maybe we could knock down the existing shelf or build something ourselves, but when we found the ALGOT system at IKEA, we decided to rethink our original plan. (By the way, this is not sponsored by IKEA. We love the style of this room!)
It met all the requirements of the products we needed and was affordable. I’m not sure we could have gotten the lumber and materials we needed to build it ourselves for much less than what we paid for this plan we just put together.
In true IKEA style, you choose each shelf and handrail individually, so we can customize our wardrobe to suit our needs. The actual equipment will vary depending on the size of the cabinet.
Small Closet Organizing Ideas For Girls
There have been many broken systems in this space. The shoes lay in a heap on the floor, mixed up and covered in dust. My sweaters were pulled up so high that I had to pick up a cane to reach them. There were so many hangers in a row that we couldn’t find what we needed. We really wanted to improve all of these things with new cabinets.
One of the broken items I wanted to make sure to fix was my storage scarf. For years I’ve used a tip we’ve all seen on Pinterest where you take shower rings and hang them on a hanger to store your skirts…
… only it didn’t work. Clothes always fall off to one side instead of properly on the hanger.#pinterestfail
The biggest problem with our old room layout was that there was a lot of wasted space. When choosing components for the new system, we really tried to use every inch we could.
Reach In Closet Systems
It was a little difficult to figure out what we needed and how it all fit together, but we were able to browse through the many options on the IKEA website to see what we liked, what we didn’t and what would be good. to suit our needs. After deciding what to do, we bought our parts, brought them home and installed them.
First we put all these bars, and then we had a lot of options that we could put. We knew we needed a top shelf, which is where we started. Then, with our needs in mind, we adjusted, reorganized and thought a little, and finally settled on the final agreement. Here’s what we came up with:
There are shelves, shoe racks and trouser hangers! There is space for long dresses and space for sweaters and even storage for things like luggage and sports! Wow! I was very happy when I saw that it was empty, but when I put all our things in there I was really in love.
Since I obviously like more clothes than Donnie, he got a small section of the closet. It had enough room for trousers, shirts, suits and ties, and there was also room for other sports and a small bag. (Hey, I gave him 1/4 of the shoe rack. That was nice of me, right? 😉 )
Common Organizing Mistakes With Small Closets
My clothes, long sweaters and scarves hang in the back, the long side on my side of the closet, and there are short sections of my shirt and pants. Right now I just keep my sweaters on a shelf (one I can reach!), but I might get a small basket or bin to hold them.
And the shoes are so cute and well made! He no longer sleeps in a messy heap in the basement. Wow!
I am so glad that after 6 years of living here, we have found a storage solution that works for us! Of course, we still need to install a new door and add some extras, but it’s working now and we love it!
