Stop Robocalls And Spam Texts With Nomorobo
Cell phone spam calls have been a nuisance for years. I get between four and six phone calls a day, and a quick poll of friends shows I’m not alone. Every waking day brings a new barrage.
Robocallers have upped their game by masking their spam with real local phone numbers. Sometimes their banter is funny—like when you get a threatening voicemail about your impending arrest for tax evasion—but more often it’s an unwanted distraction. It is very easy for these fraudsters to use the power of the internet and make multiple calls easily. And even when few people were caught in this scam, they made enough profit to cover their average expenses.
Estimates put the number of robocalls in 2019 at over 50 billion. Both the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Trade Commission say they are doing everything they can to deal with the situation, and yes, there are significant crackdowns. But real feedback shows that things are getting worse – not better – and it can often feel out of control. The FCC wants US carriers to use technology that goes a long way in combating spam calls. But we are not there yet.
So, if you’re as sick as I am of pulling your shaky phone out of your pocket to check a random, suspicious number, let’s look at some options to deal with and restore some sense of peace.
Saying This One Word To Spam Callers Jeopardizes Your Finances
First, I’ll go over some definitions, because carriers make important distinctions between these calls—even though they’re all distressed and annoying. Here’s how to view Verizon’s items:
If you’re trying to get rid of robocalls completely, it’s probably a frustrating endeavor, but if there’s a certain number that keeps calling, it’s pretty easy to block it from your iPhone or Android phone for good.
On iOS, just go to the Phone app, then tap the blue icon to the right of the recent number you want to block and select “Block this caller.”
For Android, the process isn’t much different: Go to the Recents section of the Phone app, long-press the annoying number, and select “Block.”
Don’t Try To Reach This Robocaller. It Won’t Answer The Phone
Again, it takes a lot of consistent work to keep spammers away from you – and it won’t do any good against blocked or private callers.
Most major cell phone providers have taken steps to put themselves as a barrier between you and these nuisance callers. They’ve done this through behind-the-scenes network improvements, including SHAKEN/STIR technology that allows carriers to verify that a call is legitimate, eliminating many of the spoofed numbers you’re likely to receive yourself. Local Area Code Actually, these calls are probably coming from all over the world, but it’s easy for robocallers to spoof local numbers.
All major US carriers offer some form of free spam blocking as part of your wireless plan.
AT&T has a free service called Call Protect designed to stop fraudulent calls and potential spam threats before they reach you, and you don’t need to do anything other than install software on your phone. Call Protect won’t completely block telemarketer calls, but it will at least display a “nuisance alert” when you receive them. The service also makes it easy to block callers permanently and you can create a personal block list.
Call Blocking: Stop Unwanted Calls To Your Business
There’s also a Call Protect Plus service that offers caller ID, reverse number lookup, and the ability to block or send calls to voicemail by category. These additional features cost $3.99 per month, but the basic Call Protection service is free as part of your plan.
T-Mobile’s effort to combat annoying robocalls is called Scam Shield. The free-to-download Scam Shield app includes all of T-Mobile’s various tools — Scam ID, Scam Block, and Caller ID — so you can easily set whatever level of protection is right for you. By default, suspicious calls are always flagged. Enabling Scam Block prevents your phone from ringing. And T-Mobile’s Caller ID service repeatedly shows information to anyone who calls you, even if they’re not in touch with you.
You can always turn on Scam Block without the Scam Shield app. To do this, dial #662 from your T-Mobile phone. To disable it, just dial #632#.
Scam Shield goes beyond blocking bad calls: you can also request a secondary “proxy” number that you can use when you don’t want to share your private phone number. And if you find yourself hopelessly overwhelmed, T-Mobile lets you switch your real number once a year for free.
Buyer Beware Answering Those Health Insurance Spam Calls
For an additional $4 per month per line, you can upgrade to Scam Shield Premium, which lets you “send entire categories of unsolicited, illegal calls like telemarketers straight to voicemail; Create “always blocked” lists; and receive voicemail to text. A look at your voicemails.” (Customers with the Magenta Max plan get Scam Shield Premium for free.)
Verizon’s call filtering service, which is free for postpaid lines, allows customers to “receive alerts if a call may be spam, report unexpected numbers and automatically block robocalls based on their preferred risk level.” .
You can block up to five phone numbers that you want to prevent from calling you. However, blocks expire after 90 days and are not very useful against robocallers whose number changes every day.
You can get additional features such as the ability to create a personal block list for $2.99 per month. Verizon’s Smart Family plan offers additional features, including parental controls and the ability to permanently block up to ten numbers for $4.99 per month.

There are several services like Nomorobo, RoboKiller, and Hiya that are designed to prevent robocalls from ringing your phone. Most require a monthly (or yearly) subscription. At their core, these services rely on an up-to-date list of robocallers, spammers, and scammers, and use that database to block nuisance calls. (When I say “constantly updated,” I mean they identify thousands of bad numbers every day.) A call comes in, and the service is run against a huge list of scam numbers. If a match is found, the incoming call will be blocked before you reach it.
All of them allow you to maintain your personal blacklist of things that might bother you and whitelist the things you want to receive. Some work by downloading a dedicated contact list to your phone – separate from your regular contacts. But both iOS and Android have recently given these services more leeway to take control of your phone’s apps and prevent you from being hacked. On the iPhone, you’ll need to enable them in the Settings app and give them Caller ID permissions before they get started. Apple shows you how to do it step by step.
I recommend checking out each of these services to see which one you like best. All are highly rated by customers, and all offer free trials to get you started. One of these is finally what you need to combat robocalls. It’s just a matter of finding your favorite.
Many Android phones—including Samsung and Google phones—have built-in options for flagging calls as suspected spam. If you have a Google Pixel device, the entire screen will turn red when a spam call is made, which is a handy way to ignore the call if you’re across the room from your phone. On Pixel phones, you can tap the three dots in the top-right corner of the Phone app, then Settings > Caller ID & Spam; You can then view spam IDs and filter spam calls. Other phones will have similar features.
No Caller Id: How To Know Who Called
IOS 13 introduced an app called Silence Unknown Callers that blocks callers who aren’t in your contact list, haven’t contacted you, or haven’t texted you. Instead, those calls go straight to voicemail. You can enable it by going to Settings > Phone > Ignore unknown callers.
On Android and iOS, you can set each operating system’s Do Not Disturb mode to only allow phone calls from people and businesses in your contact list. This is a very extreme and sledgehammer solution to the robocall problem and you will surely miss the calls you want to answer.
